Governor Honors Local Heroes with Spirit of Montana Award

Governor Greg Gianforte presented the Spirit of Montana award to Grayson Williams and Chancy Segeberg in Columbus, recognizing their heroic actions that saved a friend’s life after a serious car accident.

“As Montanans, we’re defined by our resilience, sense of community, and our willingness to help one another in times of need,” Gov. Gianforte stated during the ceremony. “Today, we honor Grayson and Chancy not only as heroes but also as role models. Their example inspires us all.”

The awards ceremony took place at the Columbus Fire Hall, attended by numerous community members, firefighters, and law enforcement officers. During the event, Gov. Gianforte presented the young men with a certificate and a flag that had flown over the State Capitol in their honor, along with the story of their courageous actions.

In July 2022, after a day of football practice in Shepherd, Grayson, Chancy, and their friend Ethan were driving home when Ethan’s truck veered off the road, overturned, and landed in a nearby pasture just outside Columbus. Observing the accident, Grayson and Chancy immediately sprang into action, pulling Ethan to safety, calling 911, and staying with him until emergency personnel arrived.

At the ceremony, Ethan shared his gratitude with the governor, stating that he had fully recovered after several surgeries and was back to playing basketball, baseball, and football. “I don’t know what I’d be doing right now without the help of my friends. I don’t know if I’d still be here; I’m really grateful for them,” Ethan expressed.

The Spirit of Montana award celebrates the bravery and selflessness of individuals who exemplify the community spirit of the state.
