Armstrong Appointed Chairman of Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission

May 29, 2026

OKLAHOMA CITY — North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong was appointed as the 2027 chairman of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission during the organization’s annual business meeting in Oklahoma City, adding another prominent energy policy role to his portfolio as he was simultaneously attending the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference in Bismarck.

The IOGCC voted to appoint Armstrong to the one-year term, which begins Oct. 28. He succeeded Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy in the chairmanship. Armstrong joined a distinguished list of North Dakota governors who have led the commission, including former governors Doug Burgum, John Hoeven, Ed Schafer, and George Sinner.

The IOGCC is a multi-state government agency founded in 1935 and headquartered in Oklahoma City. The commission promotes the conservation and efficient recovery of domestic oil and natural gas resources while protecting health, safety, and the environment. It currently counts 31 member states and seven associate states among its membership, with North Dakota having held membership since 1954.

The commission assists states in developing statutes, rules, and regulations governing the oil industry and serves as a forum for communication between energy-producing states and the federal government. It also maintains international affiliates in Canada and several federal agency affiliates.
