DCI Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Valley County

August 31, 2024

The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is looking into an officer-involved shooting that occurred late Saturday night in Valley County.

Around 9:19 p.m., deputies from the Valley and McCone County Sheriff’s Offices were responding to a disturbance at Roundhouse Point Campground. En route, a McCone County deputy—working under contract with Valley County—came across an argument between an adult male and female near mile marker 3 on Montana Highway 117. As the deputy approached, the male pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at the deputy. The female then aggressively moved toward the deputy, who deployed his taser, striking her. The armed male continued to advance, prompting the deputy to use his duty handgun.

A Valley County deputy arrived at the scene as the shots were fired and provided immediate medical assistance. The male was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained during the incident. The female was taken to a medical facility for treatment.

Valley County Sheriff Tom Boyer has requested a DCI investigation into the incident. The McCone County deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing. DCI is currently processing evidence and interviewing witnesses. Further details are not available at this time.

As per Montana law, a coroner’s inquest will be conducted following the completion of the investigation.
