Wyoming Guarsdman Named Deputy Surgeon General for Army National Guard

August 3, 2025

Brigadier General Toby J. Alkire, Deputy Adjutant General of the Wyoming National Guard, has been selected to serve as the Deputy Surgeon General for the Army National Guard, Office of the Surgeon General. His two-year dual-hat assignment began on June 1, 2025, and will continue through May 31, 2027.

In this role, Alkire will maintain his current duties as Wyomingʼs Deputy Adjutant General while taking on additional responsibilities under the supervision of Army Surgeon General Lieutenant General Mary Izaguirre. The position is part-time, does not require relocation, and Alkire will serve in a Title 10 status, traveling as necessary to the U.S. Army Medical Command in Falls Church, Virginia.

“This is an amazing opportunity to support the future of Army transformation at the national level
while representing Wyoming,” Alkire said. “The military health system is particularly dynamic and
rapidly evolving. To serve at this level is both humbling and an absolute honor.”

A Medical Service Corps officer, Brig. Gen. Alkire brings a breadth of experience to the position,
including his past service as a medical evacuation and instructor pilot, deputy commander of
Wyomingʼs Medical Detachment, and multiple leadership roles focused on medical readiness
and support operations.

Beyond his military career, Alkire works as a mortgage broker specializing in loans for veterans,
highlighting his continued commitment to serving those who have served the nation.

The appointment reflects Wyomingʼs ongoing contribution to national military leadership and
underscores the strength of the Army National Guardʼs medical force readiness.

Brig. Gen. Alkire was promoted from lieutenant colonel to brigadier general on March 2, 2025,
during a ceremony at the Wyoming National Guard Joint Forces Readiness Center in Cheyenne,
where his family played a prominent role in honoring his achievement.
