Wyoming DEQ Releases 2024 State of the Environment Report

June 6, 2025

The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has released its 2024 State of the Environment Report, outlining key accomplishments across the department’s four core focus areas: air, land, waste, and water. The annual report underscores Wyoming’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection while supporting the state’s economic vitality.

“This report underscores the Wyoming DEQ’s leadership and dedication to environmental stewardship and protection,” said Todd Parfitt, DEQ Director. “Wyoming consistently sets a high bar for clean air, water quality improvements, high compliance within the regulated community, and successful land reclamation—all while supporting economic prosperity.”

Among the most notable achievements: a substantial reduction in harmful air emissions in the Upper Green River Basin. Since 2008, emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx)—a key contributor to ozone pollution—have been cut by 2,042 tons, while volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been reduced by 7,698 tons.

The Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Division completed 21 reclamation projects in Fiscal Year 2024, contributing to a long-term total of over 1,200 projects since 1977. These efforts restore landscapes impacted by historic mining and promote safe land use across Wyoming.

The Land Quality Division inspected 620 coal and non-coal mines last year, achieving a 98.6% compliance rate, a testament to both rigorous oversight and industry adherence to environmental regulations.

In the area of water quality, DEQ’s Water Quality Division (WQD) assessed 17,975 stream miles and 18,640 lake acres to determine compliance with water quality standards. For waters that did not meet those standards, DEQ collaborated with local stakeholders to develop targeted restoration plans.

Meanwhile, the Storage Tank Program continues to remediate legacy contamination. Of 1,643 previously contaminated sites, 1,393 have been fully remediated, with 244 sites currently undergoing corrective action.

The Industrial Siting Division issued five major permits in FY2024, greenlighting key energy and infrastructure projects, including:

  • Cowboy Solar I & II Project
  • Dutchman Renewable Power Project
  • The Dry Creek Trona Project
  • Project West Solution Mine & Soda Ash Plant
  • Settler Wind Farm Project

These permits reflect Wyoming’s continued effort to balance environmental safeguards with economic growth in renewable and traditional energy sectors.

“The achievements highlighted in this report reflect the outstanding work and commitment of our DEQ staff, along with our state and local partners,” added Parfitt. “While this document showcases our accomplishments, it also serves as a benchmark to guide Wyoming’s continued progress.”

The full 2024 State of the Environment Report is available on the Wyoming DEQ website, offering transparency and insight into the agency’s ongoing mission to protect Wyoming’s natural resources for future generations.
