Superintendent Degenfelder Honors Military Kids, Highlights Resources for Military Families

In celebration of Purple Up Day for Military Kids, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder joined students, families, and community leaders at Freedom Elementary on Friday to recognize the important role military children and their families play in supporting the nation’s security.

Purple Up Day, observed in April during the Month of the Military Child (MOMC), honors the sacrifices made by military families. “We live in the greatest country in the world because of the devotion of our servicemen and women and their families who make the sacrifice to serve,” said Degenfelder. “I am grateful for the efforts of Wyoming schools, especially our Purple Star Schools, which ensure that military-connected students have the support they need for successful transitions.”

The event featured remarks by Freedom Elementary Principal Chad Delbridge, and Colonel Galbert, Commander of the 90th Missile Wing, U.S. Air Force, who spoke to the students and families in attendance. Additionally, participants from the Student 2 Student (eS2S) program were recognized for their efforts in helping military-connected students transition smoothly into new schools. Winners of the MOMC essay contest were also honored, and attendees enjoyed performances of the school’s song.

Throughout April, the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) is celebrating the Month of the Military Child. The WDE facilitated an official proclamation by Governor Mark Gordon, declaring April as MOMC in Wyoming. The proclamation ceremony, attended by educators, WDE staff, and military families, was livestreamed on Facebook. The Cheyenne Central High School Color Guard presented the colors and performed the National Anthem in front of the Wyoming State Capitol.

The Wyoming Purple Star School Program plays a key role in ensuring military-connected students experience a smooth educational transition. This initiative offers comprehensive support to meet the educational and emotional needs of these students.

Additionally, Wyoming is a member of the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3), which works to alleviate the challenges military children face in transitioning between states, including issues related to enrollment, eligibility, placement, and graduation.
