Senate Republicans Advance Plan to Extend Trump-Era Tax Cuts, Cut Spending

April 5, 2025

In a narrow 51–48 vote early Saturday morning, Senate Republicans approved a budget resolution that paves the way for extending former President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and significantly reducing federal spending.

The vote followed a late-night legislative session and unlocks the use of budget reconciliation — a procedural tool that allows Republicans to sidestep the Senate filibuster and pass major legislation with a simple majority. This move clears the path for GOP lawmakers to advance Trump-aligned priorities later this year, including tax reform, increased military funding, and border security initiatives, without needing Democratic support.

The budget blueprint sets the stage for trillions of dollars in extended tax relief, originally passed under Trump’s first term, and outlines deep cuts to government spending as part of Republicans’ long-term fiscal strategy.
