Secretary of State shares 2023 new business registrations

January 1, 2024

Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen recently disclosed the number of new business registrations filed with the state in November 2023. According to the Montana Business Economic Report, around 4,400 new businesses were registered in Montana during the month, surpassing the approximately 4,000 new businesses registered in November 2022.

Montana has witnessed a surge in new business registrations for the past two years, with over 53,000 new businesses registering with the Secretary of State’s Office last year. In the first 11 months of 2023, around 54,000 new business registrations were filed in Montana, indicating the state is on track to establish another record in new business registrations.

Secretary Jacobsen expressed gratitude to Montana businesses for choosing to begin their journey by registering with the office. She highlighted Montana’s ranking as the No. 1 state to start a new small business in recent years and emphasized the office’s efforts to streamline processes, reduce fees, and make it more convenient to conduct business in Montana.

Acknowledging the role of increased efficiencies in the Secretary of State’s Office, Secretary Jacobsen has actively sought ways to minimize bureaucratic obstacles and eliminate deterrents for Montana’s business community. Since taking office, she has halved registration fees for Montana businesses, waived various other fees, and announced the waiver of 2024 Annual Report filing fees for all Montana businesses filing between January 1 and April 15, 2024.

Earlier in the year, Secretary Jacobsen received the “Elevation Award” from the Mountain States Policy Center (MSPC) for her efforts in facilitating business in Montana. The award was presented at a banquet recognizing top innovators, business leaders, or elected officials in Idaho, Montana, and Washington.
