Ryan Zinke Wins Montana’s 1st Congressional District Race

November 6, 2024

The Associated Press has declared Ryan Zinke the winner of Montana’s 1st Congressional District race, securing re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Zinke, the Republican incumbent, defeated Democratic challenger Monica Tranel in a closely watched race that highlighted key issues such as housing affordability and government spending.

At an election watch party in Missoula, Tranel addressed her supporters, underscoring the importance of the democratic process. “Democracy is a messy process. And that’s the process we have. We have to follow the rule of law. There’s a process where we make our voice heard,” Tranel said. “I made the decision to put my name on the ballot because this is my home.”

Meanwhile, Zinke gathered with his supporters in Whitefish, where he shared a message of unity and patriotism. “As a military commander, I didn’t care whether you were a Republican or a Democrat. I don’t care now,” Zinke remarked. “But I do care whether you love the country. That I care about, and if we’re all willing to work… And understand this country is worth saving, then all of this will be better off.”

Both candidates focused heavily on addressing the challenges Montanans face with housing affordability and rising home prices. Zinke, in a follow-up interview, highlighted his priorities for the nation, particularly around border security and fiscal responsibility. “I think both sides of the aisle know that we can’t sustain not having a border that we can secure,” Zinke said. “You know, with the multiple threats we have overseas, we can’t sustain government spending and overreach. Enough’s enough. It’s time to clear the decks and prepare for action.”

While Zinke ultimately triumphed, the race was tight in the early stages. According to initial voting results, Tranel led by a slim margin with 49% of the vote compared to Zinke’s 48%. At the time of reporting, 139 full precincts and 289 partial precincts had been counted, roughly 19% of the total vote.

Zinke, a Montana native, had previously defeated Tranel in the 2022 election to regain his seat in Congress. Before serving in the U.S. House, Zinke represented Montana’s 1st Congressional District from 2015 to 2017, after which he served as Secretary of the Interior under President Donald Trump. He also served in the Montana State Senate from 2009 to 2013.

Monica Tranel, born in Wyoming and raised in Billings, is a failed candidate for the Montana Public Service Commission, having run and lost in both 2004 and 2020. Tranel also briefly worked for Republican Senator Conrad Burns in Washington, D.C., before transitioning to run as a Democrat for the Public Service Commission.

With this victory, Zinke will continue to represent Montana’s 1st Congressional District, focusing on key national and state issues, including government spending, border security, and housing affordability.
