Rosendale hints at Senate run

December 12, 2023

Montana Republican Congressman Matt Rosendale hinted at, though not officially declaring, his anticipated 2024 bid for the U.S. Senate. In a video shared on social media, he expressed strong consideration for running for the seat currently held by Democrat Jon Tester, citing substantial support from Montanans and dissatisfaction with the influence of figures like Mitch McConnell on the selection of the next senator.

Despite being the sole Democrat in Montana with statewide representation, Tester is a three-term incumbent and a key target for national Republicans aiming to secure a Senate majority in the upcoming election. The National Republican Senatorial Committee, led by Montana U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, has supported Belgrade entrepreneur and former Navy Seal Tim Sheehy to challenge Tester.

A group of 39 GOP state lawmakers emphasized the need for a courageous figure in D.C. who is willing to defy the establishment and restore Congress to the principles that shaped the nation. Rosendale, who has long been rumored to be considering a Senate run, has publicly criticized both Tester and Sheehy, branding them as part of the “D.C. Cartel” and the “McConnell-Biden establishment.”

The deadline for filing for the Senate race is March 11, 2024. Notably, Rosendale previously challenged and lost to Tester in 2018.
