OpenAI and SoftBank Invest $1 Billion in SB Energy to Power AI Data Centers

January 9, 2026

OpenAI and SoftBank Group Corp. are jointly investing $1 billion in SB Energy, the infrastructure company helping build out the United States’ next generation of artificial intelligence data centers.

Under the agreement, OpenAI and SoftBank will each contribute $500 million to support SB Energy’s growth as a data center developer and operator, the companies announced Friday.

OpenAI also selected SB Energy to construct and operate its 1.2-gigawatt data center in Milam County, Texas. For context, one gigawatt of power is enough to supply roughly 750,000 U.S. homes at any given moment.

The investment underscores the increasing focus on large-scale energy infrastructure to support the rapid expansion of AI technology, as companies race to meet growing computational and power demands.
