National Spotlight on Montana’s Upcoming Elections

December 28, 2023

As the 2024 election cycle gains momentum, all eyes are on the Montana Senate race, which is anticipated to be a focal point next year. The state hosts one of three Democratic-held U.S. Senate seats up for grabs in states won by Donald Trump in the previous election, the others being Ohio and West Virginia. The re-election of incumbent Senator Jon Tester is crucial for Democrats in their bid to maintain control of the Senate.

Several Republican candidates have thrown their hats into the ring for the primary, including Tim Sheehy, Brad Johnson, and Thomas Madigan. Montana U.S. Representative Matt Rosendale is strongly considering entering the race as well. Meanwhile, the gubernatorial election in Montana is also generating interest, with author Ryan Busse declaring his candidacy in the Democratic primary. On the Republican side, State Representative Tanner Smith has announced his bid to challenge current Governor Gianforte.

In Montana’s First Congressional District, Ryan Zinke is seeking re-election, facing competition from Monica Tranel, who has expressed her intention to run for the seat. The state’s Attorney General position is also up for grabs, with incumbent Austin Knudsen seeking a second term. Bozeman attorney Ben Alke has declared his candidacy, setting the stage for a competitive race.

These are just a few highlights of the upcoming elections in the state, and we will be closely covering the developments. Candidate filing is open from January 11 to March 11, with Montana’s Congressional primary election scheduled for June 4 and the general election set for November 5.
