Montana Ranked Best State for Startups

April 5, 2025

Montana has officially been named the best state in the nation for launching a new business, according to a new report highlighted by Governor Greg Gianforte on Friday.

Topping the list compiled by Entrepreneur Media and Booking.com for Business, Montana scored highest among all 50 states in key metrics including the number of startups, startup density per capita, and long-term business survival rate.

“With my experience as an entrepreneur, I know firsthand the joys and challenges of starting and growing a business,” Gov. Gianforte said. “That’s why, as governor, I’ve focused on making government more efficient, cutting red tape, and creating a climate where hardworking Montanans can invest in their dreams right here in the Treasure State.”

The report found that Montana is home to over 4,800 startups, earning a startup opportunity score of 9.55—the highest in the country. The state also boasts a 10-year startup survival rate of 41%, signaling a strong business ecosystem built for long-term success.

This recognition reflects Montana’s ongoing commitment to reducing burdensome regulations, promoting workforce development, and keeping taxes low—priorities Gianforte has championed since taking office.

Nationwide, the U.S. has seen more than 21 million new business applications filed in the past four years, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. Among all states, Montana claimed the top spot, followed by Oregon, Nevada, Utah, and Florida.

The study used the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau, ranking states based on startup activity and long-term performance.
