Montana Capitol evacuated after threat

January 4, 2024

Montana Highway Patrol Sgt. Jay Nelson has verified the evacuation of the Montana State Capitol in response to a bomb threat received around 8:30 a.m on Wednesday. MHP troopers efficiently cleared the Capitol, evacuating both staff and visitors. This incident is part of a series of threats directed at state capitol buildings on Wednesday morning, with other affected states being Connecticut, Michigan, Kentucky, Georgia, and Mississippi.

At approximately 10:15 a.m., Sgt. Jay Nelson reported that a K-9 team successfully swept and cleared the building. Subsequently, the Capitol has been reopened to the public, and staff have returned.

A spokesperson for the Department of Administration General Services, addressing the bomb threat earlier in the day, stated that close collaboration with local law enforcement officials had taken place. Following a comprehensive sweep, the threat was deemed non-credible, leading to the reopening of the Capitol to the public.
