Middle school students across Montana will test their advanced math skills in the American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC 8), hosted by the Science Math Resource Center at Montana State University’s College of Education, Health, and Human Development.
The AMC 8, part of the prestigious American Mathematics Competition series developed by the Mathematical Association of America, challenges students to solve complex math problems and build enthusiasm for advanced mathematics. The 40-minute online exam will take place on the MSU campus at 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 23.
Thanks to support from the MSU College of Education, Health, and Human Development, Montana middle schoolers can participate in the competition free of charge. Students’ results will be compared against a national pool of competitors, providing valuable insight into their mathematical abilities and fostering a sense of achievement in STEM fields.
The AMC 8 serves as a stepping stone to higher-level competitions, including the AMC 10 and AMC 12, which cater to high school students. In the November AMC 10 and 12 exams, Montana high schoolers achieved impressive results. Gallatin High School sophomore Matthew Watson earned first place in both the AMC 10 and AMC 12. Bozeman High School senior Madeline Welsh secured second place on the AMC 12, while Laurel High School sophomore Eli Gage placed second on the AMC 10.
“The AMC 8 provides young students with an opportunity to stretch their problem-solving skills and prepare for future challenges in advanced mathematics,” said a representative from the Science Math Resource Center.
With this year’s AMC 8 just around the corner, Montana’s budding mathematicians are gearing up to demonstrate their skills and passion for mathematics.
