Microsoft Takes Over Texas AI Data Center Expansion After OpenAI Pulls Back

April 1, 2026

Microsoft is taking over a major AI data center expansion project in Abilene, Texas, after OpenAI decided not to move forward with the additional buildout, signaling a continued shift as the two companies increasingly pursue separate strategies in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Developer Crusoe said it is now working with Microsoft to construct two new “AI factory” buildings and an on-site power plant at the Abilene site, adjacent to an existing large-scale campus being developed for OpenAI and Oracle.

The Abilene facility is part of OpenAI’s broader Stargate initiative, a large-scale effort to expand U.S.-based AI infrastructure that was announced in early 2025. The site has already seen significant progress, with Crusoe completing two buildings and continuing work on six additional facilities expected to come online later this year.

While OpenAI is continuing its existing development at the site, the company opted not to pursue further expansion there, instead shifting that capacity to other locations across the United States.

Microsoft, which was previously OpenAI’s exclusive cloud computing provider and still maintains a significant ownership stake in the company, is now stepping in to expand its own infrastructure footprint at the same location.

The move highlights the growing demand for data center capacity to support artificial intelligence systems, as well as the evolving relationship between two of the industry’s most prominent players.

The Abilene project reflects the broader surge in investment in AI infrastructure nationwide, as companies race to build the computing power needed to develop and operate advanced technologies.
