Livingston Man Sentenced to Life for 2022 Murder

February 3, 2026

A Livingston man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2022 murder of a man, Attorney General Austin Knudsen announced Monday.

Skyler Griebel, 33, was convicted in October 2025 of deliberate homicide following a nine-day trial. The case stemmed from a February 2022 incident in which Griebel threatened his girlfriend with a gun. When she called her ex-boyfriend, Tyler Netto, for help, Griebel confronted Netto with the weapon. Netto fled to another room to call law enforcement and deployed pepper spray as he attempted to escape, but Griebel shot and killed him.

Griebel initially denied involvement in the shooting but admitted at trial that he fired the weapon. He claimed the shooting was justifiable and argued that he was not the first aggressor. After approximately two hours of deliberation, the jury found him guilty.

Griebel requested a court exception to the mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years, but the court rejected his request and accepted the life sentence recommendation put forward by the Attorney General’s Office.

The case was prosecuted by Thorin Geist and Stephanie Robles and investigated by the Park County Sheriff’s Office with support from the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, Belgrade Police Department, Montana Highway Patrol, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation.

Attorney General Knudsen emphasized that the life sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the commitment of Montana law enforcement and prosecutors to ensuring justice for victims and their families.
