House Republicans End DHS Shutdown, Pass Budget Resolution on Border Security

May 2, 2026

Speaker Mike Johnson delivered remarks after House Republicans ended what he characterized as a Democrat-driven DHS shutdown and passed a budget resolution to fund immigration enforcement and border security for three years, a move Republicans say will prevent future efforts to reopen the border or halt the removal of criminal illegal immigrants.

House Republicans also passed legislation this week to reauthorize FISA Section 702 and the Farm Bill, the latter for the first time in eight years, delivering what supporters called long-awaited relief and certainty for rural America.

“Ultimately, the sad and actually shocking truth is there’s not a Democrat in the House or the Senate that believes border security and immigration enforcement should exist at all,” Speaker Johnson said. “By word and deed, Democrats have made clear their desire to defund both of those critical functions of our government.”
