Gianforte Honors Veterans in Southwest Montana

September 7, 2025

Governor Greg Gianforte this week recognized Montana veterans for their service to the nation and their lasting contributions to their communities, presenting the 2024 Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation during ceremonies in Beaverhead and Silver Bow counties.

“Montana is stronger because of the selflessness and leadership of our veterans,” Gianforte said. “These men and women answered the call to serve our nation, and they continue to serve their neighbors, towns, and state. It’s a privilege to honor them with this recognition.”

Established in 2021, the Governor’s Veteran Commendation honors veterans who not only served in uniform but also continue to make positive impacts in their communities. More than 170 Montanans have received the award since its creation.

On Monday in Dillon, Gianforte presented the commendation to two distinguished veterans.

  • Chief Warrant Officer Dale McKnight, U.S. Army (ret.), was honored for his decorated service in Vietnam—where he earned the Purple Heart and multiple commendations—and for decades of leadership with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was also recognized for his work as a firefighter and for his volunteer service across Beaverhead County.

  • First Lieutenant Sharon Andersen, U.S. Army Nursing Corps (ret.), was recognized for her dedicated service as a nurse in uniform and her continued commitment to caring for others. Andersen has served her community as a registered nurse, an Honor Guard member, and a volunteer with the American Legion and local programs in Dillon.

Gianforte’s office emphasized that honoring veterans through the commendation program underscores Montana’s deep respect for the men and women who have worn the uniform and continue to serve in civilian life.
