Construction Begins on New Signal Peak Energy Ice Arena in Billings

May 10, 2025

Community leaders, local businesses, and young athletes gathered this week to break ground on the highly anticipated Signal Peak Energy Ice Arena, a new multi-sport facility set to transform youth athletics and recreational opportunities in Billings.

The arena, which will be built at Amend Park, will feature two full-sized ice sheets, indoor sports courts, outdoor basketball courts, locker rooms, and spectator seating. Funded largely through a public-private partnership led by Signal Peak Energy, along with contributions from local businesses and families, the project is expected to open by late 2026.

“The Signal Peak Energy Ice Arena is the first public-private partnership on the Amend Recreation campus,” said Parker Phipps, President and CEO of Signal Peak Energy. “It shows the power of our community when they invest in what they believe in. This project will not only deliver a state-of-the-art facility to Billings, but it will also drive long-term economic success and create opportunities for athletes of all ages.”

The new arena is being built in response to growing demand for winter sports in the region. Centennial Ice Arena, the city’s only existing ice rink, currently operates at capacity, limiting access for youth hockey teams, figure skaters, and recreational skaters.

Once completed, the Signal Peak Energy Ice Arena will significantly expand access to ice sports, offering space for hockey, figure skating, curling, and general skating. It is also expected to host regional tournaments, bringing economic benefits and visitors to Billings year-round.

Local officials praised the collaborative nature of the project, highlighting the importance of partnerships between public institutions and private organizations in delivering lasting community assets.

The groundbreaking ceremony marked a major step forward for a project that aims to elevate youth sports, provide inclusive recreation, and strengthen the city’s infrastructure for years to come.
