WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has proclaimed Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, honoring the families of U.S. service members who died in military service.
In a proclamation issued Friday, Trump called on government officials to display the American flag over government buildings and encouraged Americans to hold ceremonies recognizing Gold Star families.
“On Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, we pause to honor the surviving families of our valiant patriots and renew our sacred obligation to always support them,” Trump said.
Trump said Gold Star families often continue serving their communities after losing a loved one, including through efforts supporting military members, veterans and other bereaved families.
The president also highlighted the recently established Military Spouse Commission, saying its members are working with military families and the Department of War’s Gold Star Advisory Council.
Congress designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day in 1936. Trump’s proclamation recognizes Sept. 27 as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day.
“Today, the First Lady joins me in prayer, sympathy, and gratitude for every American whose loved one gave the last full measure of devotion,” Trump said.
