South Dakota Attorney General Joins Bipartisan Call for Instagram to Strengthen Privacy Protections

August 15, 2025

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has joined a coalition of 37 state Attorneys General urging Instagram to make immediate changes to its recently launched location-sharing feature, citing concerns over user privacy and public safety.

The coalition’s letter requests that Instagram prevent minors from enabling location sharing, provide clear alerts to adult users detailing the feature’s risks and how their data will be used, and ensure that adults who opt in have a simple way to disable location sharing at any time.

Attorney General Jackley highlighted the potential dangers of the feature, noting that precise location data could be exploited by bad actors to target vulnerable populations, including children and survivors of domestic violence.

The bipartisan coalition spans states including Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
