Sheehy Sworn Into U.S. Navy Reserve by President Trump

July 19, 2026

Sen. Tim Sheehy rejoined the U.S. Navy Reserve in a ceremony at the Oval Office on Tuesday, where President Donald Trump administered the oath of enlistment to the Montana Republican and former Navy SEAL.

Sheehy, who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2008 and completed SEAL training before serving as a Navy SEAL Officer and Team Leader, had previously served in the Navy Reserve after leaving active duty in 2014 before being honorably discharged in 2019. Tuesday’s ceremony marked his return to reserve service.

During his active-duty career, Sheehy completed several deployments and hundreds of missions, deploying to Iraq, Afghanistan, South America and the Pacific region, and was involved in dozens of engagements with enemy forces. He was wounded in the line of duty in 2014, after which he left active service and went on to found veteran-led businesses focused on bringing military-grade technology to civilian public safety applications, including wildfire detection.

As a Navy reservist, Sheehy will continue his role as a U.S. senator while training typically one weekend a month and two weeks per year alongside active-duty forces.
