Sheehy Nominates Four Montanans for U.S. Service Academies

December 17, 2025

U.S. Sen. Tim Sheehy has nominated four Montana students for admission to United States Service Academies, recognizing their academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to public service.

Sheehy said the nominations reflect both the students’ accomplishments and the importance of military service to the nation.

“My wife and I met at the Naval Academy, and we were proud to serve our country — me as a Navy SEAL and Carmen as a Marine,” Sheehy said in a statement. “There’s no higher calling in life than serving your country, and it is one of my greatest honors to nominate these outstanding young Montanans for appointment to a U.S. Service Academy and to serve as America’s next generation of leaders and warfighters.”

Sheehy’s principal nominees include:

  • Logan Brown, of Belgrade, a student at Gallatin High School, nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy

  • Elise Daugherty, of Gallatin Gateway, a student at Lone Peak High School, nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy

  • Gavin T. Garrison, of Glen, a student at Beaverhead County High School, nominated to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point

  • Sam Talbot, of Bozeman, a student at Gallatin High School, nominated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

Admission to a service academy requires applicants to apply directly to the academy and secure a congressional nomination. Candidates are evaluated on academic performance, physical fitness, leadership experience, extracurricular involvement, motivation, and aptitude for military service. Graduates of the academies incur a minimum five-year military service obligation following graduation.

Sheehy was appointed in March by President Donald J. Trump to serve on the U.S. Naval Academy Board of Visitors, which oversees matters related to morale, discipline, curriculum, facilities, and overall operations of the academy.

Throughout the year, Sheehy has hosted informational sessions across Montana to educate students and families about leadership, service, and the service academy application process.

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 2008, Sheehy earned a bachelor’s degree in history and went on to complete multiple deployments as a U.S. Navy SEAL officer and team leader. He served in Iraq, Afghanistan, South America, and the Pacific region. Sheehy met his wife, Carmen, a former U.S. Marine Corps officer, while both were attending the Naval Academy.

Montanans interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy can find additional information through Sheehy’s Senate office.
