In 2026, as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, North Dakota will mark a historic milestone of its own: the grand opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL). Scheduled to debut during Independence Day festivities in early July, the Library will pay tribute to the 26th President of the United States on the same rugged terrain that helped define his legacy.
Perched above the Little Missouri River near the gateway to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, the TRPL will serve as a tribute to the “Conservation President,” whose time spent ranching in North Dakota’s Badlands left a lasting imprint on his life and policies. Designed by internationally renowned architecture firm Snøhetta, the Library is being constructed to meet the Living Building Challenge—one of the world’s most rigorous environmental building standards—ensuring the facility will generate its own energy and treat its own water.
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform how we tell the story of one of America’s most influential leaders,” said Sara Otte Coleman, Director of North Dakota Tourism. “Roosevelt’s time in North Dakota shaped his values and vision. This library will do the same for every visitor—sparking discovery, connection, and a deeper understanding of our shared history, all within the beautiful Badlands.”
More than a museum, the TRPL is designed as an immersive and interactive experience that invites visitors to walk alongside Roosevelt through the triumphs, trials, and ideals that defined his life. Exhibits will showcase his passion for conservation, his embrace of civic duty, and his embodiment of the “strenuous life.” Landscaped trails and curated outdoor spaces will further reflect his deep appreciation for America’s natural beauty.
The Library also aims to redefine accessibility to presidential history. In collaboration with Microsoft, TRPL is developing a state-of-the-art AI-powered digital archive that will unify Roosevelt’s writings and documents from 33 collections across 18 institutions, making his legacy searchable and accessible worldwide.

The opening of TRPL is expected to become a centerpiece of North Dakota’s tourism strategy, boosting economic development and educational travel. The state’s tourism office is working closely with the Library and statewide partners to develop themed road trips, community programs, and conservation-based activities that build on Roosevelt’s legacy and North Dakota’s deep historical roots.
With its ambitious design, powerful storytelling, and digital innovations, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is poised to become both a national landmark and a transformative cultural institution—just in time for America’s 250th birthday.
