MVD: new license process can be done in under 10 minutes

February 17, 2024

The Montana Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has been diligently working to enhance the driver’s license renewal and change process for residents. Laurie Bakri, the MVD Administrator, expressed her satisfaction with the progress, stating, “Best DMV experience I’ve ever experienced. I was in and out in five minutes. Quick, easy, people are so friendly.”

Bakri highlighted the positive reception of Phase 2 of the new driver services system, CARS (Credentialing and Registration System), stating, “New users are praising the implementation of Phase 2. It’s been a significant improvement.” She noted that Phase 2 has drastically reduced appointment waiting times, which used to stretch up to three months. Now, individuals can initiate the process for license renewals, replacements, and reinstatement fees from the convenience of their homes via online platforms.

According to Bakri, Phase 2 has streamlined procedures, consolidating all necessary tasks at a single desk during appointments, thus saving both time and energy for customers. “It used to take 22 to 25 minutes to complete a transaction. We’re now under seven minutes,” Bakri revealed, highlighting the remarkable efficiency achieved through these enhancements.

The success of the MVD’s efforts is evident in the statistics provided, with over 23,000 customers completing online transactions statewide and more than 53,000 patrons being assisted through appointments. Additionally, over 17,000 individuals have benefited from walk-in appointments, indicating a widespread adoption and appreciation of the streamlined process.

Curtis Robbins, the Helena area MVD manager, echoed the sentiments of satisfaction, stating, “I don’t know how many times I’ve heard this was a quick and painless process. And they almost sound surprised by it. So, just that turnaround is awesome.” Robbins emphasized the positive impact on customer experience, with many expressing delight at the efficiency and convenience offered by the new system.

Looking ahead, the MVD is preparing for Phase 3, which will focus on enhancing vehicle services such as title and registration. Scheduled for release in March 2025, Phase 3 aims to build upon the successes of previous phases, ensuring continued improvements and customer satisfaction for Montana residents.
