MSU Extension Supports Local Government Reviews

July 16, 2024

Montana State University Extension’s Local Government Center is gearing up to assist numerous municipalities and counties in Montana as they embark on their decennial local government reviews. With 43 municipalities and 12 counties opting to participate, the center will play a crucial role in providing necessary support and training to study commissioners.

According to Dan Clark, Director of the MSU Extension Local Government Center, upcoming initiatives include comprehensive training sessions tailored for study commissioners, with an online session scheduled for July 24. The aim is to demystify the responsibilities and expectations associated with serving as a study commissioner.

During the June primary elections, voters across the state were asked to decide whether to initiate a review of their local governments. Ultimately, 12 out of Montana’s 56 counties and 43 out of 127 municipalities voted in favor of conducting these reviews. The next phase involves interested local citizens filing to be elected as study commissioners.

Over the next 18 months, these study commissioners will facilitate discussions among residents about the current structure and powers of their local governments, while also evaluating alternative models. Clark emphasized the critical role of thoughtful and engaged commissioners in ensuring the success of the review process, highlighting their potential to enhance the effectiveness and responsiveness of local governance.

“All proposed changes resulting from the study commission’s deliberations will be put forth for voter consideration no later than the general election in November 2026,” Clark explained.

Individuals interested in becoming study commissioners have until August 12 to file their candidacy. The election process is nonpartisan, and there are no fees associated with filing as a candidate. Those interested are encouraged to obtain declaration for nomination forms from the Secretary of State’s website.

Moreover, individuals who have filed for the general election ballot or are considering doing so are invited to participate in an online training session hosted by the MSU Extension Local Government Center on July 24 at 11 a.m. Registration details can be found on the center’s website.
