Montana State to host national mathematics competition for middle schoolers

December 13, 2025

Montana middle school students interested in advanced mathematics are invited to register for a free competition to be held in January at Montana State University.

The American Mathematics Competition 8, or AMC 8, is a competitive exam hosted by the Science Math Resource Center in the MSU College of Education, Health and Human Development. The AMC 8 is part of the American Mathematics Competition series developed by the Mathematical Association of America. The exam offers the opportunity for middle school students to challenge themselves in advanced algebra and geometry concepts and test their problem-solving skills. The 40-minute online exam will be administered on the MSU campus in Bozeman beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Results from the exam are measured against a national pool of competitors and are designed to foster enthusiasm for advanced mathematics. The exam is free for Montana middle schoolers thanks, in part, to support from the MSU College of Education, Health and Human Development.

Registration is required by Jan. 19. To learn more and register for the AMC 8, visit American Mathematics Competitions or contact the Science Math Resource Center at smrc@montana.edu or 406-994-7476.

Similar exams for high schoolers, the American Mathematics Competition 10 and 12 competitions, were held in November, with two versions of the exams – A and B – administered on different days. Results from those exams are as follows:

AMC 10 A:

  • First: Nick Tian, Chief Joseph Middle School (testing above grade level)
  • Second: Ben Elkins, Bozeman High School
  • Third: Kitty Fosdal, Bozeman High School, and Sephora Jones, homeschool student from Laurel (tie)

AMC 10 B:

  • First: Nick Tian and Yura Trilisky, Bozeman High School (tie)
  • Second: Elliot Miller, Headwaters Academy (testing above grade level)
  • Third: Ben Elkins

AMC 12 A:

  • First: Mathew Watson, Gallatin High School

  • Third: Christopher Zacher, Gallatin High School

AMC 12 B:

The AMC 8 helps students prepare for the AMC 10 and 12 exams.
