Montana Pheasant Season Opens October 12

October 4, 2024

The highly anticipated pheasant hunting season in Montana kicks off on Saturday, October 12, offering hunters a chance to engage in the state’s beloved outdoor tradition. This fall, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) plans to release nearly 18,000 pheasants across wildlife management areas, fishing access sites, and select school trust lands.

This year marks the third installment of the pheasant release program, which was initiated in 2021 after the Montana Legislature authorized up to $1 million annually to support the effort. In 2022, the Fish and Wildlife Commission approved the release of up to 50,000 pheasants each year in designated areas through 2026.

The initiative aims to provide new hunters with a higher likelihood of success, promoting early participation in hunting and conservation efforts. Hunting plays a vital role in funding fish and wildlife conservation in Montana, primarily through license sales.

Hunters are encouraged to plan their outings using the resources available on the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks website. As they prepare for the season, outdoor enthusiasts are reminded to stay vigilant about bear safety and potential fire hazards while enjoying the field.
