Montana Officials Urge Safe and Sober Driving During National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

December 10, 2024

Attorney General Austin Knudsen and the Montana Highway Patrol (MHP) are urging drivers to prioritize safety this December as part of National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. In response to an uptick in roadway fatalities, MHP will increase patrols statewide from December 11 through January 1 to target drunk and drugged drivers during the holiday season.

Montana has experienced a concerning rise in traffic deaths this year. From January 1 to August 31, 134 fatalities were reported—a 6% increase from the same period last year. Alcohol was a factor in 36% of fatal crashes, while drugs contributed to 13%.

“Please be responsible when you get behind the wheel this holiday season,” Attorney General Knudsen urged. “You can help ensure everyone makes it home safely by simply choosing not to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

MHP Colonel Kurt Sager emphasized the increased enforcement effort, stating, “We will have more patrols on Montana roads this winter to identify impaired drivers and help everyone reach their holiday destinations safely. Have fun, but if you plan to drink, designate a driver or use a ridesharing service.”

Montana drivers are encouraged to take these precautions during holiday celebrations:

  • Designate a sober driver before attending events involving alcohol.
  • Use ride-sharing services or public transportation when available.
  • If hosting, serve responsibly and ensure guests have safe transportation options.

The combined efforts of law enforcement and public awareness aim to reduce impaired driving and make Montana’s roads safer this holiday season.
