Jeff Bezos Sparks Debate Over Next James Bond

February 22, 2025

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has ignited a passionate debate over who should be the next James Bond after taking to social media to ask his followers for their top pick.

Bezos’ inquiry comes as Amazon solidifies its stake in the iconic British spy franchise. The retail and streaming giant acquired MGM Studios—the exclusive distributor of Bond films—for $8.5 billion, though creative control remains with the Broccoli family, who have overseen the character’s cinematic journey since Dr. No in 1962.

Among the many names floated by fans, one emerged as the clear favorite: Henry Cavill. The British actor, known for his roles as a secret agent in Mission: Impossible—Fallout, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and last year’s Argylle, has long been a contender for the role. Supporters even resurfaced his previous audition tape for Bond—a role he was once deemed too young for—to bolster their case.

Cavill’s popularity overshadowed other high-profile candidates, including Mad Max: Fury Road’s Tom Hardy, Loki star Tom Hiddleston, Divergent actor Theo James, and Irish-German performer Michael Fassbender. Despite the overwhelming support for Cavill, Bezos has yet to weigh in on the fan-driven casting debate.

Beyond his action-packed resume, Cavill’s appeal extends to his deep-rooted passion for pop culture. He famously portrayed Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher, only to depart when the series strayed too far from author Andrzej Sapkowski’s original vision. His dedication, combined with his suave demeanor and leading-man presence, has only strengthened fans’ belief that he is the perfect fit for Bond’s next chapter.

While Bezos’ post may have been casual, it has reignited speculation about the future of the 007 franchise—a conversation Amazon now has a major stake in shaping.
