Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon joined members of the Wyoming National Guard in Tunisia this week, participating in activities surrounding Exercise African Lion 2026, the largest annual joint military exercise led by the U.S. Africa Command.
Held in Tunis, Tunisia, the exercise brought together military forces from the United States, Tunisia, and more than 40 partner nations to strengthen regional security cooperation and enhance readiness in an increasingly complex global environment.
“I had the opportunity to witness joint military exercises between Tunisia, France, Italy, and other African nations over this past week that demonstrate our common resolve to prevent terrorist actions here and elsewhere,” Governor Gordon said. “Sadly, the world has become the playground for those who want to defeat republicanism and democracy. The more than two decade partnership between Wyoming and Tunisia stands as an example of the solidarity of nations which value freedom. I was also able to encourage the partnership between our governments and academic institutions dealing with global issues such as agricultural strength, natural resource management, energy, and cybersecurity and computer technology.”
African Lion 2026 marks Tunisia’s tenth consecutive year as a host nation and represents the first phase of a broader multinational effort that will continue in Ghana, Morocco, and Senegal. The exercise includes more than 5,600 personnel and highlights a Total Force approach, integrating active-duty military with National Guard, Reserve, Air Force, and Marine Corps units.
“Witnessing the natural leadership of the members of our Wyoming Guard was impressive and inspiring,” Governor Gordon said. “Being given the opportunity by Ambassador Bill Bazzi to celebrate the possibilities for growth brought about by Donald Trump’s global leadership was an honor every conservative Republican should embrace. And in this sesquicentennial year, this opportunity is especially poignant as Morocco was the First Nation to recognize the United States as a nation in 1797.”
The Governor’s visit underscores Wyoming’s continued support for the U.S. military and its commitment to global partnerships that enhance security and stability.
