Governor Gianforte Declares Flooding Disaster in Northwestern Montana

December 13, 2025

Governor Greg Gianforte has issued an executive order declaring a flooding disaster in northwestern Montana as historic rainfall and snowmelt swell local rivers.

“Continued rainfall across northwestern Montana has flooded some of our communities, including the town of Libby,” Gianforte said. “This order will ensure resources are deployed quickly and effectively to protect Montanans and their property.”

Since December 8, the Fisher and Yaak Rivers have seen significant rises. The Fisher River has climbed nearly four feet and is expected to reach minor flood stage Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Yaak River has risen approximately five feet, surpassing the eight-foot flood stage.

Lincoln, Sanders, and Flathead counties have each enacted emergency or disaster declarations and activated relevant emergency management plans. The Montana Disaster & Emergency Services State Emergency Coordination Center has also been activated, coordinating with state, local, and federal agencies to provide resources and support to affected communities.

Officials are urging residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert, follow local guidance, and take precautions to protect life and property.
