Five Montanans Honored with Governor’s Arts Awards

September 20, 2024

Five distinguished Montana artists have been recognized with the state’s highest honor for those whose careers exemplify the visual, performing, literary, and traditional arts.

The 2024 Governor’s Arts Award recipients are:

  • Jackie Larson Bread of Great Falls
  • Jim Dolan of Belgrade
  • John Dunnigan of Whitefish
  • John Lowell of Livingston
  • Mary Gayle Shanahan of Helena

The awards will be presented in a ceremony at the Montana State Capitol in Helena on December 5, 2024.

“We are proud to recognize these Montanans for their unique ability to showcase the beauty of our landscapes, mark moments in history, and represent the sights and sounds of our vibrant culture,” said Governor Greg Gianforte. “For generations, the Treasure State has stirred the creativity of writers, artists, and musicians, and we’re glad to honor these individuals for their talents.”

The Governor’s Arts Awards recognize achievement and artistic excellence, dedication to Montana, ongoing contributions to the cultural community, and worthiness of recognition.
The awards ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. in the Old Supreme Court Chamber of the Montana State Capitol. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and a reception to follow. The ceremony will also be broadcast on Television Montana (TVMT).
