FBI Identifies Shooter in Attempted Assassination of Former President Trump

July 14, 2024

The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks as the suspect in the attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The incident, which unfolded on Saturday, ended with the suspect being fatally shot by Secret Service agents just seconds after shots were fired towards the stage where Trump was addressing the crowd.

According to the FBI, investigators are currently working to uncover the motive behind the attack, which resulted in the tragic death of one rally attendee and left two others critically injured. Former President Trump sustained an injury to his ear during the incident.

In Bethel Park, where Crooks resided, law enforcement authorities have cordoned off streets surrounding his family’s home. Residents, like Mary and Stanley Priselac, expressed shock over the incident, describing their neighborhood as typically quiet and free of such incidents.

Crooks, a recent graduate of Bethel Park High School, received recognition for academic achievement, including a “star award” from the National Math and Science Initiative. A 2022 graduation ceremony video featuring Crooks was cited by the New York Times, showing him in a black graduation gown receiving his diploma amid applause.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that Crooks carried no identification at the scene of the shooting, necessitating alternative methods for identification such as photographic evidence and biometric analysis.

The investigation into the motives and circumstances surrounding the attempted assassination of former President Trump remains ongoing, with federal authorities continuing to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident in Butler, Pennsylvania.
