DNRC Announces Record $92 Million Investment in Montana Public Schools

December 28, 2024

In a historic milestone, the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) has announced the investment of more than $92 million in public schools, marking a record-breaking revenue contribution from the state’s trust lands.

“Thanks to DNRC’s responsible management of state trust lands, this historic $92 million investment will provide our students with the resources they need to succeed and reach their full potential,” said Governor Greg Gianforte. “We remain committed to ensuring our schools are fully funded to support students, teachers, and parents.”

The DNRC manages state trust lands with the goal of generating revenue for trust beneficiaries, including Montana’s K-12 education system. This year’s record revenue, allocated to the Office of Public Instruction (OPI), is attributed in part to multi-year hydroelectric lease rental payments distributed from escrow.

“State trust lands are a critical source of revenue that enhance educational programs, facilities, and resources,” said DNRC Director Amanda Kaster. “We are proud to play a key role in supporting the education of Montana’s students and remain dedicated to ensuring these lands continue to benefit present and future generations.”

The $92 million investment will be strategically utilized to address pressing needs within Montana’s education system, including:

  • Technology upgrades to enhance learning tools.
  • Curriculum development to meet evolving educational standards.
  • Facility improvements to create safer and more effective learning environments.

State trust lands have long served as a vital resource for funding educational excellence in Montana, providing schools with the means to improve programs and ensure students have access to the tools they need to thrive.

This historic investment underscores the state’s ongoing commitment to fostering a strong education system and ensuring opportunities for Montana’s next generation.
