Bloom Energy Set to Join S&P 500 Monday, Drawing Fresh Index-Fund Buying

September 20, 2026

Bloom Energy Corp. is scheduled to join the S&P 500 before Monday’s market open as part of the index’s quarterly rebalance, a shift that could trigger substantial buying from the passive funds that track the benchmark.

Inclusion in the S&P 500 typically forces index funds and exchange-traded funds that mirror the benchmark to purchase shares of a newly added company to match its weighting, a dynamic that can drive meaningful demand independent of a company’s underlying fundamentals. Trillions of dollars in assets are benchmarked to the S&P 500, meaning even a mid-cap addition can see a noticeable bump in trading volume and price as funds adjust their holdings ahead of and around the effective date.

Bloom Energy shares closed Friday at $265.63, down 5.39% on the day but still up more than 205% year to date and roughly 228% over the past 12 months. The stock’s 52-week range spans from $61.37 to $351.28, and shares remain well above both their 50-day moving average of $225.26 and 200-day moving average of $198.01, reflecting the sharp rally that has taken the stock from a small-cap name to a company now valued at more than $78 billion.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company designs and manufactures solid-oxide fuel cell systems that generate on-site electricity without combustion, converting natural gas, biogas, hydrogen or blends of those fuels directly into power. Its Bloom Energy Server platform has found growing demand from data centers and other critical infrastructure customers seeking reliable, on-site power generation, a theme that has coincided with surging electricity demand tied to artificial-intelligence infrastructure buildouts.

Wall Street’s overall view of the stock remains positive heading into the index change, with 17 of 32 analysts rating it a “buy,” 12 rating it “hold” and three rating it “sell,” for a consensus “buy” rating. The average price target sits at $285.40, with estimates ranging from $176 to $351.

Bloom Energy’s addition to the S&P 500 reflects the company’s rapid ascent in market value over the past year, as investor enthusiasm around distributed power generation and data-center energy demand has fueled a sharp rerating of the stock. Index additions are watched closely by traders for the trading dynamics they can create in the days surrounding the effective date, as funds rebalance their portfolios to reflect the benchmark’s updated composition.
