Tony Romo, CBS Sports Part Ways After Nine Seasons

October 3, 2026

Tony Romo is leaving CBS Sports after nine seasons as one of the network’s most prominent NFL analysts, ending a broadcasting run that began shortly after his retirement from professional football.

CBS Sports said Friday that it and Romo had “mutually agreed to part ways,” roughly two months after the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was placed on leave following a July arrest in Wisconsin for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

“We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward,” the network said.

Romo was arrested July 23 following a traffic stop in Milwaukee. According to court records, an officer reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol and said Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests before being taken into custody.

Romo pleaded no contest Sept. 1. His driving privileges were revoked for six months, and he was ordered to use an ignition-interlock device, complete an alcohol assessment program and pay a fine.

CBS had already moved J.J. Watt into Romo’s role on its lead NFL broadcast team. Watt will remain the network’s lead game analyst.

Romo, 46, said he plans to step away from broadcasting for a period before deciding what comes next.

“I’m going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity,” Romo said.

Romo joined CBS in 2017 after retiring from the NFL and quickly became one of television’s highest-profile football analysts.

Before entering broadcasting, Romo spent his entire NFL career with the Cowboys from 2004 through 2016, earning four Pro Bowl selections.
