Daines Votes No on Becerra Confirmation to be HHS Secretary

U.S. SENATE —U.S. Senator Steve Daines today voted against the confirmation of President Biden’s Health and Human Services Secretary nominee Xavier Becerra.

“Xavier Becerra has made a career out of defending the abortion industry and promoting far-left priorities like free healthcare for illegal immigrants. He has shown that he will take this agenda so far as to infringe on religious freedoms,” Daines said. “While I hope he does not weaponize this $1.3 trillion department to impose his progressive agenda on the country, I will do all I can as founder of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus and member of the Senate Finance Committee to prevent that. We can’t allow an unelected bureaucrat to compel Montana taxpayers to fund abortion or subsidize healthcare for illegal immigrants.”

Senator Daines delivered remarks on the Senate floor yesterday to voice his opposition to  Becerra’s confirmation.

Last month, Daines sent a letter to President Biden urging he withdraw Becerra’s nomination due to his radical agenda. Click HERE to read the full letter.

During the Senate Finance Committee hearing on Becerra’s nomination:

  • Becerra refused to answer Daines’ questions about his support for abortion, including selective abortion for babies with Down syndrome and partial-birth abortion. To watch the exchange, click HERE.
  • Daines questioned Becerra on his attacks on religious freedom throughout his time as California’s Attorney General, including on the Little Sisters of the Poor. Becerra dodged. To watch the exchange, click HERE.

Daines also pressed Becerra on his support for open borders and his stance on providing illegal immigrants with taxpayer funded healthcare. Becerra failed to recognize the damage the far-left policies would have on Montana. To watch the exchange, click HERE.
